Why the mountains?
Lachie has been a mountain bunny since he grew up in Kenya and Scotland.  Whether he's scrambling up on foot, on a mountain bike or letting a mule or 4x4 do the work, he  loves the challenge, scenery and variety of mountains.
Why Colombia?
Lachie first travelled to Latin America as a student in 1991, since when he has returned time and time again, visiting almost every country across the continent. He had to wait for a posting in the region till the final chapter of his diplomatic career in 2021-24, when he was based in Bogotá.

At the end of his tour in Bogotá, Lachie and his wife Melanie spent 4 months driving the length of South America in a Landcruiser camper, following the Andes south till they ran out of road!
The Colombian people are the most engaging and fun you will meet anywhere;Â the country encompasses every geography you could wish for; Â and the flora and fauna is fantastically abundant, making for incredible wildlife viewing.

Why Central Asia?
Lachie first travelled to the former Soviet Union in 1989 as a backpacker, trundling west from Beijing to Berlin on the Trans Siberian as the Iron Curtain collapsed, lending him a fascination for the region that persists to this day. He first visited Central Asia in 1997, since when he has travelled far and wide across this enormous space, in particular whilst based with his family on postings in Baku and Kyiv.

Lachie loves the magnificent Pamir and Tien Shan mountain ranges of Central Asia; the extraordinary history, encompassing civilisations reaching back to before Alexander the Great passed through; and the intriguing geopolitical currents, with Russia, Iran, China, Turkey and the West vying for influence
